Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
